Reality Blog: The Important Client I’ve Been Ignoring

  1. Dear Candice:

Many of those in my generation (the Be-Bop-a-Roo-Bop Baby Boomers) were raised with the idea that what we did for others was far more important than what we did for ourselves. This “selflessness” has always been a two-edged sword. It led to much higher expectations of us from others, and lower expectations for ourselves from ourselves. That sort of thinking has turned many a wonderful career into a sour, unfulfilling job.

I truly appreciate your comments and understanding. I think you’ve really made some excellent points and have offered some great advice. I would only add a teensy thing or two from a half-century of experience.

One: Remember that you are worth all the effort you put into yourself and your dreams. God didn’t place you here as punishment. It was with the expectation that you would actually have some earthly happiness and reward for your efforts.

Two: When you find yourself saying, “But this client is paying my bills, so I have to put him first,” try to remember this: If you always put the client first, eventually all you’ll have is the taste of ashes in your mouth. As you so wisely point out, no client lasts forever. Well, probably no client. Paying the bills is one thing. But giving up you hopes and dreams is too much to ask of yourself. You need to give yourself as much attention (and care) as you give your clients.

A writing career is different than any other business I know (and I’ve worked in a number of them). Giving yourself every opportunity to succeed is the assurance that you will.

Love your articles! All my best.

  2. Hi Tom, thanks very much for your inspiring and encouraging comments. I’ve already copied and saved them into a Word document because I know I’m going to want to review them again. You make great points – with an interesting generational perspective I hadn’t thought of before. And thank you for the compliment as well.

    Warmly,
    Candice
