I want to hone in on my copywriting business, but need some ‘polishing up’ on my ability to write “engaging content” for my audience. I’ve been a student of AWAI for 5 years and have only one small “writing assignment” so what will it take for me to land that first big paying assignment? Can someone in the AWAI community share some winning concepts with me?
Larry,
You are to be commended for your desire to keep learning through AWAI and continue seeking bigger clients. Like you, I’ve benefitted from AWAI resources for several years. One of the lessons I’ve learned about landing assignments is to use the people you already know. Nearly all of my clients have been people with whom I had a connection (or were a friend of someone I know).
If you haven’t already done so, spread the word about the services you offer. Be diligent in letting family and friends know what you are doing and how you can help. They may not need your services, but they may know someone who does. Another related action step involves connecting with local groups or organizations (e.g., chamber of commerce) where you can make new friends and network. Be patient and persistent.
Well, I am barely beginning my journey, but from the few networking events I have attended, I can see a great need for copywriters.
But I will say this: you must first know what that “big” writing assignment is. There has to be a need for that service, and you must be able to deliver it.
And maybe not focus on the big one.
Focus on a few more regular-size ones, and the big one will follow.
