Marking it up makes it your own. I don’t like to read a book that has been marked up by someone else, but to mark my own book with notes and highlighter, makes it very personal and precious.
I also add a date … that makes it more fun to read down the road and you can see the progress you’ve made.
I’ve had to extent that to web pages as well … I often find a link either through a post or status update, navigate to the page, find some great information, and then navigate away from it, and often lose it forever. Need to work on my online bookmarking too!
Thank you for the great article. I have found that taking notes increases my understanding and retention. Have you heard of the book by Mortimer Adler, “How to Read a Book”? I discovered it about 20 years ago and found it worth reading or at least skimming.

Hi Marianne, I agree about marking my own book up – there’s just something about it. And, I love your idea of including dates! What an awesome idea!
Hi Marianne,
Thanks, and good tip re: adding a date … will start doing that too!
Cheers,
Jim.
Hi Jim,
Great article! Thank you for the reminder that we need to do more – much more – than simply reading a book. Taking action makes all the difference.
Hi Christina,
