Reality Blog: What I Learned From My Niche Switch

  1. Hi Candice,
Your story sounds very much like mine so I totally agree with everything you are saying here. I first tried financial then alternative health. The penny dropped and I now focus on the building and construction niche because this is what I fully understand. My journey so far has been very rocky but very educational. I market myself everyday and write at least two articles or posts each week. I have found by doing this my writing gets stronger and attracts more potential clients. I wish you the best in your career and have enjoyed reading your article.
    John.

    1. Hi John,

I hadn’t realized that you’ve switched niches a few times! Knowing that, and seeing how well you’re doing in your current niche, is great inspiration. Thank you for sharing. I appreciate your kind wishes and enjoy reading your LinkedIn posts as well.

      Cheers,
      Candice

  2. Excellent tips! I was especially struck by the tip to keep your marketing materials mostly general — this has been a problem for me in the past, when I wrote out materials for a specific niche…and then changed my mind. Facepalm.

The trouble I’m having now is finding a niche I can get excited about that also requires a lot of copy. I’m interested in the travel & tourism field in general — educational travel in particular — but I’m having trouble getting more specific than that. (I work as a teacher for a huge educational travel company that uses a lot of copy, but I’m not sure about the rest of the field.)

Perhaps my niche-researching skills are not up to par! Any specific strategies on how to handle niche research?

    1. I’m glad you enjoyed them! Keeping your materials general will save you a lot of time in the event you ever decide to change or add another niche in the future.

Have you researched the travel industry trade organizations? That should be a good place to get an idea of how many educational travel companies are out there. If the number is too low, you may want to broaden your niche. Also, see if you can find the top 20 or so businesses in that field. Send for catalogs, and look at their website and online presence. See how much copy they use and what kind. If there’s not a lot out there, that may be another way hint to broaden your focus a bit.

I hope this help. Good luck narrowing it down! And please let me know how it goes.
