Google + is definitely a Facebook and LinkedIn threat, no question about it. Google has been spending millions perfecting it. It fills a need that Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter can’t even begin to meet because of their technology / platform limitations.
Bottom line: most of us have been (or are just now starting to) struggling with separating our business and personal lives. For me, I don’t necessarily really want my work contacts to know many things about my personal / family life and vice versa. Which is why I’ve kept Facebook mostly for personal stuff and LinkedIn for professional. On the other hand, Facebook has some features that make it attractive for work — it’s far easier to send simple messages or photos to members of a group that people have joined. But overall, it’s interface sucks for so many reasons I could write TOMES about it. LinkedIn also leaves much to be desired from a user interface POV. Which is where Google + comes in. I can keep my circles separated, put someone in more than one circle — and a circle doesn’t have to include people. I can include blogs, photos, podcasts, videos, websites, etc. Makes it far easier for me to build a community custom to what I’m interested in. No other application does that.
But it doesn’t mean that Google’s out of the woods just yet either. Privacy will rear its ugly head as soon as Google starts incorporating the data and knowledge it gleans from plus when it delivers up search engine results and starts selling such super specific targeting to advertisers. In fact, I’m not sure I’ll welcome that myself. Smacks too much of Big Brother…..
Hi Mary,
Thanks for sharing! Gosh, when you put it that way, I’m totally sold on Plus! I actually have two FB accounts for the very reason you mention — I network with a lot of people I don’t really “know”, so I don’t want personal pics and facts out there. But it makes for a problem, because not only do I have to manage two accounts, but there are some things I’d like to share with copywriting colleagues that I can’t because of privacy issues … I have a lot of problems with that, especially as I get to know more freelancers well! I think I’ll dive right into Plus then, and I’ll hope they do better balancing privacy than FB … time will tell, like you said. 🙂

I’ve never been an early adopter, but I jumped onto the G+ bandwagon as soon as I could get an invite. I’m not sure yet exactly where it will fit into my social media strategy, but there are some aspects I think will prove very useful. Those are Sparks and Hangouts. Mindy, thanks for this Google+ …just wanted to note for everyone that SocialMediaExaminer.com is a great resource to keep up with changes in the social media scene.

Time will tell. My two cents,

Hi Susanna,
Great, thanks for the link! I love your tagline as a “future expat” — awesome!
Please keep me posted on any advantages you find to Google+. Looking at what it offers that FB doesn’t, I’m already impressed, I have to say. 🙂
