The Reality Blog: “Cheat” a Little To Avoid Writer’s Block

  1. Hi Mindy;

    What a great article. I really like what you said about research, “Research is also critical for building proof and credibility, and for coming up with ideas that will make sure your copy resonates with your reader.”

    I didn’t realize how true that was until I found myself last week at lots of appointments for my children. I took a notebook and pen, but I couldn’t do research because I don’t have a laptop. So as I wrote there would be big holes in what I wanted to say.

    One day, when I get my laptop, I hope to be able to say; “Dan Kennedy, Mindy Tyson-McHorse, and me all have something in common: We’re all million dollar copy-writers!”

    P.S. Another tip that helps me is a list of copywriting formulas that I have written down. They help me get started when I can’t figure out how to approach a project.

    1. I love what you wrote! And yes, I think we will all have that million-dollar mark in common some day! 😉

      Good comment on the formulas. I frequently forget to refer to the ones I have and then I end up taking a lot longer to do things … must get better about using short-cuts!

      I know what you mean about the big holes in writing when you’re at a pre-research stage. I end up leaving blank lines where I know I need to go back and add some good stuff, but it’s a little irksome to look at my copy and see loads of blank lines with little content. Sometimes I wonder if an iPad might be worth the huge investment, just to have something super-portable that searches the Internet quickly – anybody out there have any comments on this?

      Thanks for sharing, Julie! Always lovely to hear from you.

  2. I’ve found that the program Dragon Naturally helps me. I just start talking to my computer. Like Mindy I have headline, etc written in front of me and then I start blabbing. I also ask questions while I’m talking.
